EL YUNQUE RAINFOREST
El Yunque National Forest is located only 5 minutes car drive from the Rio Mar Resort. El Yunque, which is managed by the United States Forest Service, provides visitors the opportunity to learn about their tropical forest surroundings. Visitors come here to hike, picnic, and swim in cool mountain streams. You can watch 68 types of birds, and admire 50 species of orchids that grow here, or the 150 kinds of ferns and 225 natives tree species. Although many spectaculars sites including the cascading waterfalls and the rivers and trickling streams which collect into gentle pools of rainwater, the greatest excitement of the forest is experienced along the 13 trails that cover 23 miles of incredibly varied terrain. The hiking trails are well maintained and accessible, designed for foot travel only. Don't miss El Portal Rain Forest Center, with its interesting exhibits in English and Spanish, a well-stocked bookstore and a souvenir shop. El Portal features a theater that presents a documentary film every half-hour, and several interactive exhibits, including one entitled “Understanding the Forest." El Yunque provides the opportunity to enjoy its treasures with a forest guide through the Rent-a-Ranger program. Reservations are necessary and a fee is charged.
