ACTIVE EXCURSIONS
For those wild at heart join an adventure
excursion for a day of rappelling, cave exploring, body surfing
or exploring a deserted island 50 miles off Puerto Rico’s
western shore.
El Yunque Canyoning
Tanamá River
El
Yunque Canyoning
The Caribbean
National Forest, better known as El Yunque, is the only
tropical rainforest managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
It is well known for its dozens of trails, observation
towers and waterfalls. But what if you could ride the
waterfalls and experience the thrill of canyoneering in
the unknown and rarely visited areas of the forest? The
same local company that will take you body rafting through
caves and down the Tanamá River will take you on
this unique adventure.
Canyoneering involves hiking through canyons where
ropes and basic climbing skills are required. Here you
will rappel along the waterfalls, descend on ziplines,
and leap from the rocks into the refreshing waters of
the river. This exciting adventure takes place in the
rarely visited southern end of El Yunque, a United Nations
World Biosphere Reserve.
If you feel you’d rather do with a little less
adventure, you can still experience El Yunque through
one of the marked hiking trails that allow you to explore
some of the forest’s crags and waterfalls.
In any case, 50 species of orchids, 150 kinds of ferns
and 68 bird species will surround you. Whatever your
level of adventure, a day at El Yunque will be an unforgettable
experience.
Tanamá
River
The Tanamá River
has adventure written all over it, but it’s definitely
not for the faint of heart or out of shape
A local adventure company will take you on a journey like
no other. It begins along a beautiful trail that borders
the Arecibo Observatory, the largest radar/radio telescope
in the world, which is nestled in a natural sinkhole in
the primeval karst forest.
You will slide-descend for 800 feet to land in the cool
waters of the Tanamá River then body raft down
the river through caves and canyons. At last you will
emerge from Ventana (Window) Cave, to be dazzled by the
beauty of some of the most striking valleys in Puerto
Rico.
If you’re really wild at heart, spend the night
along the riverbank. Set up camp with your fellow travelers,
make a bonfire and cook your own food. Late at night the
sky will appear brighter than any place in the universe.
